Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Many people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads most commonly through the air in tiny droplets of fluid between people in close contact. The disease is mild in most people; in some (usually the elderly and those with comorbidities), it may progress to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multi organ dysfunction.
